General
We have a Product Selector tool which can be very useful as a general guide. You can also check out the case studies from our Brand Ambassadors, where they talk about the products they use and the reasons why they use them. You can also ask questions in our Forum where there are 1000's of experienced Vista art resin customers! You can also email us for specific advice sales@vistaresin.com.
The unopened shelf life is 12 months as a general guide. It may be possible to use thereafter. Once the Part B has been opened it will eventually form a skin as a result of exposure to air. There is a possibility the A will become crystallised if left in the cold, but that is quite easily reversible, see here.
We recommend to wear PPE when using epoxy resin and to use in a well ventilated area. The specific recommended PPE for each product is available in Safety Data Sheets on the downloads section of the product page. Please see our blog post 'Guide to Equipment & PPE for Epoxy Art Resin'.
You can use our easy online Resin Calculator which will do the work for you! Our 1-2-1 Resin Vista One is only mixed by volume, and is exactly equal – so 50ml to 50ml or 200ml to 200ml etc. Our 2 to 1 resins have two different mixing ratios. Vista Turbo, Cascade and Rapids are all mixed using a volume ratio of 100:60ml and a weight ratio of 100:50g. Our deeper pour resins Lake, Ocean and Mariana are mixed 100:50ml and 100:45g.
There is a blog post which includes the equipment you need – Read our 'Guide to Equipment & PPE for Epoxy Art Resin' blog post. There is also a lot of helpful information on our Vista Art Resin Forum and you can read about how our ambassadors work here as well.
Product Performance
Vista '2 to 1' resins are heat resistant up to 100oC. See Heat Resistance Test Report carried out by Biochemist Carl Gibson. Please note that heat resistance is reduce by additions of colour, and care should be taken to limit additions. We recommend to leave products 14 days prior to exposing to excessive heat.
Vista is currently undergoing FDA testing for our '1 to 1' and '2 to 1' resins and expect to have results in April or May 2022. We also have in development a product produced from materials contained with the Commission Regulation EU No 10/2011 Food Safety List, which is undergoing migration testing in accordance with the aforementioned regulation.
Curing times depend on a number of factors. What is the depth of application? Epoxies generate heat during the process, and the deeper the application the more heat and the faster the curing process is. For thin applications, we recommend using one of our faster curing resins and employing the use of a heat mat or propagator. For further reading see our blog post 'How Epoxy Resins Cure'.
Like the curing time, the pot life is dependent upon a number of factors. But the biggest factor when considering pot life is the mass of the product in the pot. A large amount of epoxy in a container will have a significantly reduced pot life in comparison to the same amount of resin divided into 3 different cups. Other factors are the product type and ambient temperature. For further reading see our blog post 'How Epoxy Resins Cure'.
Vista products are now UV stable – we have spent 12 months re-formulating our epoxy resins with our leading industry chemists. UV Stability is an enormous advantage and reason to choose Vista instead of other epoxy, which will degrade and yellow significantly over time. We believe a UK manufactured, UV stable resin represents by far the best quality available in the market. See our blog post about 'UV Stable Epoxy Art Resin'.
Usage Defects
Don't worry, this is a common issue with ALL epoxy resins and is called crystallisation. Crystallisation is quite easily reversable. Here's a blog post 'How to Reverse Epoxy Crystallisation' which provides advice and instruction, and we also have a very helpful Video on our Youtube Channel.
Surface stickiness and scorch marks are caused by a common phenomenon in epoxy resin called Amine Blush or Amine Bloom. Amine Bloom / Blush is typically caused by low temperatures and / or excess moisture in the air. You can prevent this problem occurring by ensuring you are using the right product (fast enough curing), and are curing the products in a warm and dry space. For more information see our blog post 'How to Stop Amine Bloom and Blush in Epoxy' here; also our helpful Youtube video on the subject.
It might be that your Part A has bubbles or is crystallised, see our advice above. If the A is clear prior to mixing, the next step is to check your mixing technique. You put bubbles into the resin during mixing, but the aim is to fold in the resin generating as few bubbles as possible. If you're mixing gently, then it might be you just have the wrong type of resin. Resins get thinner the deeper they are designed for – more information in our Blog Post 'How to Stop Bubbles in Art Resin'.
Typically, this will be a result of using the wrong type of resin. Read our blog post 'How Epoxy Resins Cure' for more information. Deep pour resins are designed to react with low heat to counteract the heat generated from a deep pour. If these products are poured at thin depths, they will not generate sufficient heat. If it is just surface stickiness please see 'The Surface is Sticky' above.
Over-heating occurs when the heat generated from the reaction is too great! Variables that can cause over-heating are 1. The type of resin you are using, learn more about that in 'How Epoxy Resins Cure' 2. Mixing or Pouring to too great of a depth. The more mass of epoxy, the more heat generated during the reaction. 3. The ambient temperature can significantly affect the rate of reaction, with higher temperatures putting more energy into the reaction.
